Virtual reality and augmented reality can create immersive experiences that the brain and body remember as being real, offering new avenues for human transformation. Jeremy Bailenson, Director of the Virtual Human Interaction Lab at Stanford, shares research into how these technologies are being used to treat pain, build empathy, and provide relief, and reveals their potential to reshape experience during illness and at end of life.

Jeremy Bailenson, PhD is the Founding Director of Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab, Thomas More Storke Professor in the Department of Communication, and, among other positions, a Faculty Leader at Stanford Center on Longevity. He studies the psychology of Virtual Reality, in particular how virtual experiences lead to changes in perceptions of self and others. His first book Infinite Reality, co-authored with Jim Blascovich, was quoted by the U.S. Supreme Court outlining the effects of immersive media. His new book, Experience on Demand, was an Amazon bestseller.
