The Pause: Taking Time After a Patient Dies

Amid the work of saving lives, teams of clinicians witness death with heartbreaking regularity—and then move on to the next patient in need. Emergency Department nurse Jonathan Bartels saw the toll this was taking and developed “The Pause” to encourage his peers to stop for a moment for moment of respect and reflection.

About the speaker(s)

Jonathan Bartels, RN is a palliative care nurse liaison at the University of Virginia Health System, where he has worked in various roles for the past 21 years. In 2011, while working as an Emergency Trauma nurse Jonathan implemented “The Pause,” as a way to honor the death of a patient. Since 2009, Jonathan has worked in collaboration with University of Virginia School of Nursing as a pioneering member of the Compassionate Care Initiative to help educate nursing students and physicians on how to promote practicing resiliency.
